Reiki, a Healing Modality you can Trust

dr. mikao usui

Reiki, a word so many people do know and, still, so many times misunderstood but, also totally trusted. Reiki is a healing modality you can trust, and it even doesn’t matter if you do believe in it or not. Reiki does work.

Reiki means simply translated “Universal Life Force

A short History of how Reiki came to the Western World

First, Reiki is as old as mankind, like some teachers would say. Reiki isn’t New Age or just some esoteric stuff. Reiki was known to the Atlantic people and it is said, that Jesus actually healed, by using Reiki, he once was taught.

Whatever might be the truth, we actually will never know for sure. Nevertheless, there is some history in existence which has brought Reiki to the awareness and, over time, got spread throughout the world. It still does to this day.

Reiki wasn’t founded (sometimes you will read about it that way), but actually re-discovered by a Japanese, Dr. Mikao Usui ( 1865-1926).

However, he became known as the “Founder” of the Reiki healing system we do know about to this day. Reiki itself was and is an energy form who will always exist.

Remember, in one of my previous articles, I stated, that “Energy can’t be created nor being destroyed, we only can transform it“.

How Reiki was rediscovered

Dr. Mikao Usui has traveled the world. He was well-educated but throughout his life, he wasn’t very successful.  Around 1914 Usui’s life, business and personal was crumbling and to gain insight and get some answers, Usui loved to meditate on spiritual power spots like Mount Kurama in Japan.

Here, he also had received his early Buddhist education.

He went to this mountain and stayed there for twenty-one days. After descending back, he injured one of his ankles and was told by his intuition to put immediately his hands on the injured area.

Usui later said, that he saw a bright light coming from his hands and entering his body at the same spot he had his hands on. He felt the energy as gentle but, at the same time, also as extremely powerful.

When he took his hands off, he could stand on his foot again, the pain was gone, and he proceeded to descend without any more problems.

This story has many variations but, in its essence, it always comes down to the injury when descending the mountain and how quick it healed.

How finally Reiki became known beyond Japan

A Hawaiian woman by the name, Ms. Hawayo Takata, has become so sick, that her doctors actually had given up on her. This was the time when she heard of a Reiki Clinic in Japan and against all warnings decided to travel there.

She was treated by Dr. Hayashi in his Reiki clinic for four months. She survived, the tumor had disappeared and Ms. Takata was healed.

Since Ms. Takata was a woman, it wasn’t easy for her, in the beginning, to convince Dr. Hayashi to initiate her into Reiki. Before this day, no woman ever was taught or initiated into Reiki.

However, being persistent has prevailed and in February 1938, Ms. Hawayo Takata was initiated as a Reiki Master.

Back in Hawaii, Ms. Takata opened a Reiki clinic and had given, not only Reiki treatments but, initiated her first students of Reiki. Ms. Takata became a well-known healer and traveled the world, giving and teaching Reiki.

After Ms. Takata’s transition, in 1980, she had initiated twenty-two, Reiki Masters. From these twenty-two Reiki Masters, Reiki was taught throughout the world and has spread into every country on every continent.

Reiki has become the most known hands-on healing modality of our times.

How Reiki is being taught

Reiki will be taught by a trained Reiki Master/Teacher. There are 3 levels of Reiki a student has to go through before they become a Reiki Master.

Reiki level 1-2 are already enough to practice Reiki on others, as well as on animals. With Reiki level 1 the student receives the knowledge of how to conduct themselves and how to proceed correctly with the Reiki sequences. With both levels, when the training is finished successfully, the student can call themselves a Reiki practitioner.

With Reiki level 2 the student, in addition, will receive 3 healing symbols which have to be kept sacred and secret.

With Reiki Level 3, the student will receive an addition of information about how Reiki can be used and more. After the testing is successful, he/she will be called a Reiki Master.

How is Reiki being performed?

Reiki is 100% safe, not only to humans but to plants and to animals too. When Reiki is performed, the person, either will sit comfortably on a chair or, is lying on a massage table. The client is always fully clothed.

The Reiki practitioner then “activate” its hands and will, either slightly touch the client or, will have its hands slightly above the client’s body. The practitioner will follow a certain sequence, and at each point will keep its hands for several minutes.

The practitioner is able to feel the flow of the energy and therefore, can pinpoint where the energy flow of the client is moving or might be stagnant. A full Reiki treatment will take about 60 minutes but also can be done in a shorter time as well.

Reiki is safe and non-invasive. Reiki is a good healing tool to support a person who is also under medical care. Reiki will never interfere with an existing medical treatment.

Reiki can help to enhance a person’s personal healing power and therefore, can recover much sooner from many health issues. Reiki works not only on the physical level it also works on the emotional, mental and spiritual level.

Reiki works beautifully with animals and children and can be used to treat plants of all kinds.

I am a Reiki Master/Teacher and, besides have given lots of Reiki treatments, I also love to teach Reiki as well.

I am old school when it comes to teaching Reiki and therefore, don’t appreciate that Reiki is now (thanks to the digital world we are living in) also being taught online without any one-on-one class setting.

This can never be a satisfying experience for a Reiki student. Reiki is a teaching modality, for first-timers, being taught one-on-one. Many elements of Reiki will be missed when being only taught online. Since there is no existing law in forbidding it, we have to accept it.

The same goes for the Reiki symbols, which should stay sacred and secret. When going online, everyone nowadays can easily find them. Again, there is nothing we can do about it.

Nevertheless, I will teach Reiki the way it was taught to me, and my students will always receive the knowledge but, will also have the freedom to make up their own minds.

You can find lots of great information by going to this Reiki Center, which I really personally love and appreciate the work it is doing.

  1. Thanks for sharing this wonderful post about energy, I initially have only read about it that  It develops our capacity to channel more refined frequencies of Reiki energy. Improves the flow of your energy as the energetic pathways are brought back to their original state. It reaffirms the importance of your self care.

  2. Hi

I personally know there is much more in this life when it comes to supernatural powers. Reiki? I’ve never heard of this before, rather than now. Maybe I’m bit unlucky for Buddy not to have been practice in my country. But one question i need you to answer that, according to you, Jesus Christ was taught Reiki and he used it for heallings? Can you please establish it for me how and where he used it?

    1. Thanks for the comment and question.

Jesus, according to the Bible, did lots of healing using its hands. However, what he accomplished is not to be taken as a repeat for us when we use Reiki.

He healed the Blind, made the lame walk again and so forth. He was the one who trusted unconditionally God’s love. Something many of us, in our day and age, still are not capable to do the same.

Nevertheless, using Reiki can help to enhance the healing energy within us and this alone is amazing.

  3. This is interesting and very eductive blog about reiki and the art of healing I would I am hearing about for the first time and by the your explanation it’s. An art worthy  to be learned having said that I really would love to know more about this method of healing and I will  take the knowledge to our people in Africa it always good to help and reika can offer that help.

    1. Thank you for your the time leaving a comment. I am sure you will find Reiki practitioners in Africa too just try to look it up online.

  4. Yep, Reiki is a word I’ve heard before…but I don’t know the ‘in’s and out’s’ of it, so I landed on your article in an attempt to find out more…

I have heard of spiritual healing before but I really had no idea there were so many examples of people being cured by the Reiki type of healing. I live in the UK – do you know if it’s spread this far yet – are there Reiki clinics over here?

    Very interesting article.

    1. Thanks, Chris, for your comment and yes, there are Reiki practitioners in the U.K. I am sure when you google it they will jump out of the monitor, just saying. 🙂

  5. I was introduced to Reiki in college. A friend of mine had Fibromyalgia. Her nerve endings were hypersensitive. Anything that touched her hurt, including clothes. Reiki and a good massage helped her to be pain-free for an hour at most. But medication didn’t even offer pain-free time. It just made the pain manageable.

During an event, a couple Reiki practitioners came to the skill and gave free short sessions. I tried it out with her. It’s been several years now so I don’t remember too well. The only part that sticks out is that it gave a similar sensation as massaging. When I get a massage, my hands and feet will get tingly until the massager works it out. The same thing happened with Reiki except in my head.

    1. Thanks, Nicole, for your comment and insight about Reiki.

Reiki certainly can help in so many ways. It takes time and consistency and is not a miracle method. However, miracles do happen but this also goes for everything in life.

Reiki can help to manage pain, addictions and so much more.

  6. Very interesting article on Reiki and this is the first time I heard about Reiki. Thank you so much for this valuable article. I do believe in spiritual powers. It is good to know that you are providing distance healing. It is a very good service that one can give by healing a person who is in trouble. I hope that you will publish more articles on Reiki.

    1. Thank you for leaving a comment and if you like to read more on Reiki you certainly can find more articles on my website. 🙂

  7. Sylvia,

I had heard of Reiki and a friend of mine was trained as a Reiki practitioner so I was aware of it, but your article was very good in that it gave me a history and better explanation of Reiki than I had before.

I appreciate that Reiki doesn’t claim that it will supplant modern medicine, but rather enhances it.  I don’t know how it works, but I have met people who like it very much.

I will have to look into this more.

    Thanks, Ellen

    1. Thank you, Ellen, for your comment and insight.

I believe it is always best to experience something on your own to know what is the “big fuss” everyone is talking about. 🙂

Perhaps, your friend can give you a session with Reiki it certainly would help you to get a much better understanding about Reiki.

  8. Sounds like this is something I could learn too.
I had received once a Reiki treatment but this is over 20 years ago. I still remember, though that I felt fantastic afterwards for a long time. 🙂

  9. I have actually had 2 clients discuss Reiki with me over the last year or so, and both of them swear by it. I have always viewed holistic lifestyle as just people who are averse to medicine. However, even for those of us who will medicate when necessary, there are some holistic approaches out there that can actually prevent a lot of health issues before they start. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. Thanks Oliver for leaving a comment and sharing your thoughts.

Reiki is certainly a wonderful healing modality to actually prevent and heal many ailments.

I certainly have seen it happen on others and on myself. 🙂

  10. I believe in healing powers. I had never heard of Reiki though. I believe that we all have the natural power to heal, but it sounds as if becoming a Reiki master takes things to another level.

Have you been practicing Reiki, and if so, how long? What has been your experience thus far?

    1. Thank you for your comment and questions.

Yes, you are right we all have innate healing powers even animals but we are spmetimes not aware of it or just do ignore it.

Yes, it does take awhile to become a Reiki Master nothing will be achieved in a short period of time but everyone can do and learn it, also kids.

I am with Reiki now for 22 years and my experience with this healing modality is amazing. I have seen people healing from conditions as well personal issues. Every healing, however, is individual and this is an amazzing fact as well.

  11. Hey Sylvia,
I’ve heard good things about Reiki and I’d really like to learn more oh how I too can manipulate energy to cure myself. I think its amazing how you can detect blocked energies, is there any way for beginners to feel that too on their first try?

Interesting read, thank you for taking the time to write this but I think the link to your “Store for My Services” is broken though, I can’t seem to click on it.

    1. Thanks, Riaz for your comment and for letting me know about the technical issue, I will fix that.

Back to your question if a beginner can detect blocked energies. In Reiki level 1 you will be instructed in how you can do this. Although, it will take some time to trust your senses but it is achievable.

Some people have already a natural ability to do it but, as I stated before, it is possible for anyone to learn it and with practice become good at it as well. 🙂

  12. Hi Sylvia, thank you for this great article and explaining what is Reiki and how it is re-discovered. I have heard about Reiki many times but didn’t really understand what is it about. I didn’t know that with Reiki you can heal animals and plants too. It looks like a very powerful healing tool. Could you please tell me how long it takes to become Reiki level 1, Reiki level 2 and Reiki level 3?

    1. Hi Tamara,

Thank you for the time to leave a comment and for your interest about learning Reiki.

First, I have to warn you NOT using any “Online” offered Reiki course, Reiki has to be experienced one-on-one with a qualified Reiki Teacher.

Some Reiki Teachers doing it the “old” way by teaching one Reiki level at the time. Between each Reiki level there should be at least 3-6 month. Again, it depends on the Reiki teacher, some even will wait for a year before allowing a Reiki student to get to the next level.

However, nowadays it is common that Reiki 1&2 are being taught together in a 3 days course.

Here is a good website where you can find where is Reiki taught near where you live.

      Hope that helps. 🙂
