Reiki is not New Age nor any Old Age either. Reiki is and was always there, I might even bold enough to say that Reiki is as old as the Universe. Why else would the word Reiki translate into “universal life force energy”?
Some “unfounded” Facts of Reiki History
Besides Dr. Mikao Usui, the “founder” of the Reiki Treatment we know of today, Reiki is an ancient healing energy dating back to the Atlantis area. Visiting many seminars and workshops in the last twenty plus years this was mostly the common ground.
Reiki, at least, being as old as Atlantis. I certainly can’t and will not say that it is true, but I do feel the energy is a part of a greater truth.
Dr. Mikao Usui is the one Master who actually has re-discovered Reiki and more or less brought it to the awareness of not only the Asian world but also as well to the Western world.
Even the history surrounding the person and the life of Mikao Usui will differ from Reiki teaching to Reiki teaching. Some may say Usui was a Businessman, other say he was a Buddhist monk, again, others say he was a Christian. None of them or all of it can be true.
One of the most reliable source when it comes to Reiki and its true origin is The International Reiki Center for Reiki Training
Feel free to read more about it and make up your own mind.
The Big Three of Reiki History
Dr. Mikao Usui is the founder of modern Reiki. He is the one who re-discovered this universal life force energy.
After 21 days of fastening and meditating he started to descend from the mountain he was on and when he walked down the narrow pathway he injured one of his ankles.
Usui had to sit down and a voice told him to put his hands on the injured foot. After a while, by doing so, the pain had subsided and Mikao Usui could proceed with his descend and without any problem.
From now on he started his healing journey giving Reiki to the people, mostly to the poor population. In this time he started to teach and had his students with him all the time, teaching Reiki and to spread the word.
One of his students was Dr.Hayashi, which not only has become a follower of Usui but, of the whole Reiki education after Dr. Mikao Usui passed away on March 9, 1926.
Dr. Hayashi held a successful Reiki Clinic in Tokyo, Japan. He also had Reiki students and followed the training curriculum and ritual taught by Usui. It was in the late 30s that a woman came to his clinic very ill and almost on the brink of death.
This woman asked for help and to be treated in Dr. Hayashi’s Reiki clinic, the woman’s name was Miss Takata.
She stayed for a long time in Japan coming originally from Hawaii. Her persistence to be treated with Reiki showed success and she became cured of the ailment she has suffered.
Miss Takata also wanted to learn Reiki and being a woman wasn’t a good start to get there, until then, only men had the privilege to learn Reiki and even become a Reiki Master.
Once again, Miss Takata stayed persistent and eventually was attuned to become the first female Reiki Master, allowed to practice and to teach Reiki.
After she has received her Reiki degrees she left Japan and went back to her home country of Hawaii.
Immediately she started to give Reiki treatments as well as teaching Reiki. Miss Takata, however, was very strict in how Reiki has to be taught until 1982.
No Reiki student of her was allowed to take notes or draw down the Reiki symbols given in Reiki Two level. Reiki was only an oral teaching method back then.
She also attuned 22 Reiki Masters during her lifetime.
It is being told that her granddaughter, Philis Lei Furumoto, had been the one who spread Reiki even further into the Western World. Reiki has finally reached the U.S.A., Canada, and Europe by the mid-80s.
Miss Takata also had a more controversial approach when it came to the request of a Reiki practitioner to be attuned as a Reiki Master/Teacher. To receive this highest Reiki level it was required to pay $10000.
Miss Takata explained her decision by ensuring that the person who wants to teach Reiki really does teach Reiki.
I personally can see what she meant although, I certainly don’t agree with the amount of money she thought would ensure it. Keeping Reiki on a clear and highest quality as a healing modality to the world is, nevertheless important.
Even more so with all the offering in our digital day and age to learn Reiki in form of an “online course”.
I AM STRICT AGAINST IT!
In this article “Why Reiki should Not be taught Long Distance”
I do explain why I am opposed to teaching Reiki as a long distance course. Actually, this goes for all hands-on healing modalities.
For what can Reiki be used?
Reiki is so versatile that many of my students couldn’t believe it at first when I told them how they can use Reiki.
The use of Reiki:
- Giving Reiki to other humans
- Giving Reiki to animals (wild & domestic)
- Giving Reiki to plants (trees, flowers, vegetables, any seed)
- Giving Reiki to the Past and into the Future
- Giving Reiki to projects you are working on (painting, writing etc.)
- Giving Reiki to a room, an apartment, house, workplace etc.
These are really just a few possibilities in how Reiki can be used on a daily basis. Learn Reiki for yourself and find out how amazing the Reiki energy can be in your life.

Now, as you can see, hopefully, by reading this post you will have gained an understanding that Reiki is and has to be more than just another “New Age” method.
Reiki, as I like to teach in my classes, is a part of any “living” being, humans, animals and plants alike. I even will go that far to say that rocks too can receive and give Reiki.
Those who do work with crystals and gemstones do know what I am talking about.
However, this will be addressed in another post. Stay tuned. 🙂
Feel free to leave a comment below or ask a question you might have I will answer it as best to my knowledge and ability.
Have always an outstanding day!
