We now have arrived at the 4th chakra and will continue the discussion of the complete chakra guide to the 7 chakras. I do recommend, if you haven’t done so, to read first the articles about the three chakras I already have written.

You can get some quick information about all 7 chakras through the short version I have written.

Let’s see what we can find out about this chakra

What is the Chakra’s full name and where is it located on the Body?

The 4th chakra, also known as the Heart Chakra will have its location at the center of the chest where our physical heart is located. Its Sanskrit name is Anahata (pronounced: ahn-ha-ah-ta).

This chakra will show us how deep our love really is. How is our love towards other people, our next neighbor? The love we have for our pets and other animals; and how real the love is towards Mother Nature (the environment) as a whole.

However, and this is a really important aspect, how do we handle the love towards ourselves? Do we hate us because we have some visible flaws as well some invisible ones? Do we trust others with our full heart, but more importantly do we trust ourselves?

These all are simple, but nevertheless, very important questions we need to ask ourselves. It certainly doesn’t mean we are unable to love, the question rather means do we love the right way and by them I mean, are we capable of “unconditional” love?

Specifics of the 4th Chakra

The Heart chakra, as I said, is located in the chest where the physical heart is. This chakra is the center of our existence and is the connection to all the other chakras.

Note: All the chakras are connected with each other. However, there are also some “special” connections between the three lower and the three higher chakras, which will be addressed in future articles.

The first three chakras, the Root chakra, the Sacral chakra, and the Solar Plexus chakra are the chakras which are mostly connected to our physical manifestation. Everything we need to exist is represented in these three chakras.

The Root chakra stands for all the survival aspects, the Sacral chakra for our identity of male or female and the creativity we have as well how we handle our sexuality, the Solar Plexus stands for our personal power, the who we are.

The 4th chakra is at the center of all the chakras and it represents “Love”. The love we have, as I prior said, for others and for ourselves or the lack of it. It shows how strong and deep our compassion is for other living beings and non-living (material) things, and if we are capable of practicing unconditional love.

The 4th Chakra and the Emotion (unconditional) Love

Love is an emotion which is, believe it or not, not only unique to humans. In the past, scientists and non-scientists alike thought, that love, as we know, can only be found in humans since we are the one being at the top of the food chain.

Furthermore, it was argued, that we, as the human race, also do have the ability of reasoning and therefore are the only ones who can discern love from non-love.

I strongly disagree.

I personally do believe, because we have this “newer” part of our brain called the “frontal lobe cortex” that we, actually, have love categorized into two parts: a) worthy of our love or b) non-worthy of our love. In other terms, because of our ability to reason, we are the only mammals alive who have conditioned the emotion of love.

Love, every mammal is born with it to some degree; we the human race is the only one who has put a price tag on love, so to speak. We will decide who we love or don’t love. We are also capable of exchange love with hate, none any other mammal will ever do.

The argument about if “higher” animals are really capable of real love, or only it’s the fact because they will receive food or any other reward when they show a certain behavior?

I am not disputing this. However, I also was, for many years, a pet owner and I saw the behavior of my pets towards me when, for example, I wasn’t feeling well. They did show me more love and compassion in my darkest hours than every other human being I have known and this is a fact.

the-opposite-of-love-is-not-hate-it-is-fear

I guess, for those readers who are a “parent” to a dog, cat, horse etc. will know what I am talking about.

Besides, there are more and more studies coming up that certain animals are capable of showing love, grief and other emotions, on their own, like i.e. elephants, gorillas or orangutans’, without any modifications done by humans.

The Strength of the 4th Chakra

The Heart chakra is the center, the powerhouse of the whole chakra system. It is the mediator between the body, represented through the three lower chakras and the spirit, represented through the three higher chakras.

When the 4th chakra is open the individual is able to express love, plain and simple, that’s why the Heart chakra is so important. It teaches us that love is the most powerful energy we can have and that we can act out of love and compassion if we choose to do so.

The Heart chakra stands for compassion, generosity, forgiveness, hope, peace, unity and unconditional love. When this chakra is open it radiates love and forgiveness, something we, unfortunately, can see in our societies to be in decline.

However, this chakra also teaches us to learn to love and to fully accept ourselves for who we are. When we follow these traits, we can be transformed and even be healed.

A person who has a strong heart chakra will radiate natural warmth, sincerity, and happiness. It will love unconditionally and is living in the now.

What are the most Physical Problems?

Our hearts are the center of love and we all know it and therefore won’t dispute it, even though some of us are not into any spiritual or esoteric explanation of the heart, and this is fine. You don’t have to.

Nevertheless, when we are in distress of any sort, for way too long, our hearts can get tired too, even sick and sometimes go on strike, as I like to phrase it. Who hasn’t heard of the phrase that someone’s heart is broken because their love for a person was either betrayed or they have lost then due to an accident or more horrific due to a crime?

only-love-can-be-divided-endlessly-and-still-not-diminished

People indeed can die from a broken heart when the pressure of the stress, whatever the reason for it might be, was too strong, too heavy to the heart. Our heart is the strongest muscle in our body and it can take a beating beyond any conceivable measures but, it does have its limits.

When we talk about heart health we mostly do speak of doing more exercise, keeping our heart rates up. Eating less fatty and carbohydrate foods, and yes, all these things are very important to be taken into consideration for a better, a healthier life.

Before I go a bit deeper to talk about where we further should have to take a closer look at, here are the most known physical heart problems.

  • Chest pain
  • Lung congestion
  • Upper back tension
  • Blood pressure imbalance
  • Heartburn
  • Cold extremities
  • Tight muscles
  • Aches, pinches
  • Cramps and numbing

To learn more about our heart and what it is capable of the Institute of Heart Math has devoted its research solely to this organ and its relation to the brain. The video below explains it what this means in more detail.

I personally do recommend taking a closer look at this institute and what its mission is.

What are the Signs of a Weak or of an Overactive 4th Chakra?

As discussed with the previous chakras, the heart chakra too can be weak or even overactive.

These are the signs for a weak 4th chakra which doesn’t indicate the physical aspect of the heart but will show us a person’s behavior.

magnetic-field-of-the-heart

Being anti-social and withdrawn are the first two signs of having a weak heart chakra. Being intolerant to everything which doesn’t measure up to a person’s own created standard are further signs as well as being very critical and judgmental.

Furthermore, loneliness, fear of rejection and lack of empathy are also characteristics of a person with a weak heart chakra.

Note: We all, at some point in our lives, went through one or two of these characteristics due to some unpleasant experiences, and this is also totally normal. The argument is, that we like to judge ourselves for being human, and not 100% perfect, or even living a saint like life. We have and will go through some stages of these feelings, however, that doesn’t mean we are a “bad” person.

Even some criminals may still have some empathy left in them for something, like loving animals but unfortunately, have no mercy left for their own kind. It is a difficult subject and each one of us has to draw their own conclusions.

Let’s move on and discover how the characters may look like for a person having an overactive heart chakra.

The first thing comes into play is co-dependency. A co-dependent person is usually someone who has a wide-open heart and can “only” see the good in others even though the “others” may be cruel or cold towards them. They are full of hope that one day they can “heal” them, that’s why they never leave. This is also a sign of being over-sacrificing; putting other people want and needs over theirs.

Another trait of an overactive 4th chakra is demanding. Being, for example, co-dependent doesn’t mean the person also can be very demanding, or even jealous.

How to get to a balanced State with the 4th Chakra?

So, how can we achieve to be more in balance with our heart chakra? As I mentioned earlier, we all may have experienced the fact that our chakra might have been weak or overactive, at some point in time but we always can and will bounce back.

When we are in a balanced state we radiate warmth, compassion, sincerity, happiness. We also will have a strong connection to all life forms there is and the willingness to help and being in unity. Furthermore, of being a peaceful and loving person will complete the circle for Love.

Loved

In the following chapters, you can discover what you can do, which also won’t you cost very much. There is so much you can do to feel more in balance and being centered in your love for others and most of all in your love for yourself.

What is the Emotional State of the 4th Chakra?

The emotional state is Love, but also Grief will come into the mix. When, we have problems with our 4th chakra, as discussed above, we will experience them because we feel the grief.

However, love is our strongest emotion, after fear. The Heart chakra is considered to be the bridge between the physical chakras (lower chakras) and the spiritual chakras (the higher chakras).

We are being grounded to the earth by these physical chakras and will rise to the heavens through the spiritual chakras. The major function of the chakra is to balance, to balance our love, where we from build relationships and through these we also have the opportunity to work on ourselves.

When we are being loved, we can rise high and above ourselves. The love from our lover is a mirror into our deeper being. This is reflected through the words and the behavior of our love interest.

We are also capable to switch from conditional love to unconditional love if we are able to fulfill this step we are 100% balanced. And when we are balanced we are also capable, without any question, to love ourselves of who we are, free of self-doubt and self-judgment.

Colors

Colors are also one of my favorite tools when it comes to balancing the chakra system. Colors are a part of our daily life when we like to surround ourselves with one or more of our favorite colors.

However, there is also the fact that we might have an aversion to a specific color and this can result in that we also reject this color. When one of our chakras is in need of a specific color we might even not want to deal with the color that has the closest relation to the chakra.

In the case of the Heart chakra, the color is Green and its frequency is 526-606 THz (Terahertz), the complementary color is Red.

If you will find yourself disliking a certain color which is also associated with one of the 7 chakras, I still do highly recommend that you use this color anyway. If you are in need of balancing the 4th chakra and you don’t like the color green, try to wear some underwear in this color or PJ’s for the night. Nobody will see it and the same, more or less, goes for you too.

Wearing a color, in any way possible, is easy to do and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

Note: In the case of the Heart Chakra the color Red is the complementary color, however, I do not recommend wearing this color during the night hours since it can create some, unintentionally, hyper action. This might show in form of being unable to fall asleep or in any other form of sleep interruption. The color Green would be always the better option.

Our world would be Blanc without any colors and Mother Nature has such a vast of colors to offer it is sometimes mind-blowing. Let’s put more color into our world.

Crystal & Gemstones

When you love jewelry, then buying a couple of them shouldn’t be an issue. As long as you choose one of the appropriate stones suitable for this chakra. Wearing a bracelet or any other form of jewelry item is easy and fun to do, even for the guys.

However, if you still don’t feel comfortable to wear them out in the open you can also buy a tumbled version of any gemstone or crystal and wear it in your pockets. As long, you will keep them close to you, in your personal auric field, you are good to go.

Here are a few suggestions of the gemstones to be used to balance the 4th chakra.

  • Aventurine
  • Emerald
  • Green Agate
  • Green Calcite
  • Jade
  • Malachite
  • Peridot
  • Rose Quartz
  • Turquoise

Meditation

Meditation is easy to do, easy to learn and when being done, at least, once or twice a week it will have a profound impact on your overall health, especially, for your mental and emotional state. Being a total beginner shouldn’t keep you from starting to do some meditation.

Therefore, here is a guided meditation which I recommend you start with. Enjoy!

Affirmation

Affirmations are a wonderful thing to do but as I have said it before, unfortunately, doing it as an only tool won’t do much good in a short or even middle term. Using affirmations is useful when combined with, at least, one of the other suggestions to balance your chakra, any of the chakras.

The use of affirmation needs to be done diligently becoming almost second nature to the user. However, we all are humans and when we do start something new we are full of enthusiasm at first but most of the time we also do fall off the wagon. This could be due to time issues, a general change in our daily routine, you name it.

Nevertheless, I highly do recommend using affirmations to show you what you can do to change your “negative” self-talk, and we all do this from time to time, into a positive one. In the time it can change your attitude quite a bit. You will see.

How to use them is simple, write down at least three of the suggested affirmation statements on a piece of paper and say them, either out loud if possible or silently in your head, 3 x, that’s all. You can repeat it throughout the day as often as you want there are no limits.

After a while you even don’t need you little piece of paper anymore and can create your own positive statements in seconds, it really doesn’t take long to do this on your own.

To start with the affirmation for the Heart Chakra here are a few preset statements. Choose the three statements you feel most drawn to, again, there is never a right or a wrong.

  • I love myself for who I am
  • I feel love for myself and for others
  • The love I feel is unconditional
  • I love the peace and sanctity of my home
  • I trust in love
  • I open my heart to love
  • I forgive myself
  • Love is the purpose of my life
  • I am grateful for all the love I have in my life
  • I open myself to the healing powers of love
  • I follow the path of the heart
  • I trust that the healing power of God’s love will heal my mind, body, and heart

Feed your Body the right Food

To feed the right foods to our body isn’t something new. Everyone, by now, knows about the discussions of a healthy balanced diet going on in the media, on TV, in magazines, just to mention a few.

My personal belief, however, is the fact, that we all have, somehow, our own personal balanced diet. This means, that the combination of foods may differ between you and me. As long, you feel energized, having a healthy weight and feeling mental as well emotionally refreshed and alert; you certainly must do something right.

heart-chakra-food-think-green

For me, food guidelines are just something I can take as a thought, perhaps an inspiration but in the end, I have to find the right diet tailored for me.

Note: In my opinion, a “wrong” diet can only be called as such when you eat too much only from one thing, only from one food group. Reduce processed foods of all kinds and drink plenty of water. This alone can help you to stay healthy in your overall health, including the chakras.

The following foods and herbs are considered being beneficial for the 4th chakra but I also do encourage you to do your own due diligence and research further.

Food:

  • Avocados
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Cucumber
  • Green Salads
  • Peas

Herbs:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Chamomile
  • Calendula
  • Fenugreek
  • Juniper Berries
  • Saw Palmetto

Aromatherapy

I do love essential oils and therefore, aromatherapy is always one of my favorite tools to help to balance, not just the chakras, but the whole “ME”.

Another great plus point, when using essential oils, is the fact, that you really need only a couple or so drops of the oil. The oils are highly concentrated and using too much of it can also be a bit “sickening” so use it sparely and the positive effect will be very rewarding.

For starters, here are the most used essential oils for the 4th Chakra:

  • Cedarwood
  • Eucalyptus
  • Fir
  • Oregano
  • Peppermint
  • Rose

Summary

The Heart chakra is the center of our existence and it is a bridge builder between the three lower chakras, Root, Sacral and Solar Plexus chakra, we already have discussed; and the three higher chakras, Throat, 3rd Eye and Crown chakra.

Without our physical heart and the energy of the heart chakra, also supporting this organ, we would be “nothing”. To radiate love, compassion and peace make us, as a human race, complete.

Please feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on this matter as well ask your questions, I am happy to answer them if I can.

Please, stay tuned for the upcoming article on the Throat Chakra.

As always, have an outstanding day!

  1. Hello Sylvia,

I really enjoyed reading your profound article about the 4th chakra. I have heard about the seven chakras and now by reading about it, I realize that I want to learn more.

Just like you, I believe that it is important to have a holistic view when it comes to heal diseases and to stay in balance. I also believe that animals have feelings and not just instincts. When visiting my parents I love to meet their cosy little cat. He really feels when my parents are sad and always goes to give them comfort at such times.

Love the quote “Only love can be divided endlessly and still not diminish”.

    All the best,
    Pernilla

    1. Thank you, Penilla, for this comment and your personal insight on the matter.
I am hoping also, that my articles about the chakras do spread some awareness that we are more than “just” our physical bodies.

      Namaste
      Sylvia

  2. This was an amazing read about the Heart Chakra. I have heard about the Heart Math Institute but never really looked into it, thanks for the link.

  3. Hello Sylvia,I am learning many things through your posts about the chakras. In particular I think that this 4th chakra post is the one I liked the most and not because the others are not as interesting or valuable but because I feel that this chakra is essential to harmonize everyone else, now the secret – that for sure you will teach us – is to know how to open that unconditional love chakra.Thank you!

    1. Thanks, Tommy for your comment and insight. It is not unusual that an individual may feel drawn to a specific chakra.

The secret to activate unconditional love is actually not a secret but the fact that forgiveness is the key.

Start to forgive! Forgive others and most of all forgive yourself, that’s all.

The other thing I like to mention is to practice gratitude. Be thankful and grateful for everything you have right now and for the lessons to be learned.

I thank you for your comment and interest in the subject matter.☺

  4. Hi Sylvia,

This is a great article full of many useful information. I never know about most of those things you talked about in the article. When going through the article I was wondering how human could possibly know that Chakra is the centre of our existence.

I know the love is felt in the heart but not the specific place where it’s felt.

I agree, if you show love to any animal, they will return the love.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    1. Thank you for taking the time and leaving a comment, appreciated. I also recommend that you read about the first three chakras too, this can reveal even more information for you which you can utilize for your personal development.

  5. I was so happy to see this website come up, I have always had an awareness of the energy our bodies carry.  I am heavily influenced by others energy whether it be negative or positive.  In my younger years I experimented with wicca thinking that was the route I should go with all this energy.

Anytime I’m around radio stations with my movement it usually messes up the signal, always have a lot of static as well.

I personally think that body in mind have to be aligned to benefit from all I can and I still haven’t achieved that.

I was always drawn to the tigers eye stone and the blood stone, another thing I used to collect without really knowing anything about them.

    1. Thanks, Amanda for your comment and personal insight. The part where you describe being around radio stations and messing up the signals is not unusual. It does happen, still, to me too after so many decades 🙂

Some people just do have lots of energy which can make them a magnet for other energies as well, positive or negative.

Use those gemstones you feel personally drawn to, especially, the Tiger eye is very good for protection being around other people or just being outside, away from your home.

  6. Hello,

I have just been to my weekly yoga class.

I enjoy yoga and have an interest in the chakras but haven’t got around to learning about them. This article is informative with lots of information and visuals.

However, am using an iPad and your site is not very clear on it as it takes all the content over to the left of my screen and the text is very small. I don’t know if this is to do with the theme you are using but it isn’t interacting well on iPad. Has anyone else pointed this out?

    1. Louise, sorry to hear about your visual troubles of my site, not sure if I can help you with that. However, I am glad though that you found the article informative.

  7. Hi Sylvia!

Thanks for one of the most extensive yet easy to understand explanations of the chakras, their interconnection and the other associated activities such as the use of meditation, colors etc. This is a topic that has always been of interest to me, but some of the books and articles I’ve read seem to talk “over my head”, or make me feel somehow not spiritual enough.

Your articles are different, you speak like one friend talking to another and it makes me feel more included if that makes any sense!

The inclusion of the video from the Institute of Heart Math was truly interesting and educational. I felt this video gave even more credibility to your article. The same goes for the 10 minute guided meditation video. It was extremely helpful for someone new to meditation like myself.

I will be continuing to follow your educational posts about the chakras, and how to effectively balance them for a more connected and fuller life experience.

Thank you again for your caring approach to educating the novice about the power of the chakras.

    1. Kyle, thank you so much for your quality comment and your high interest in the subject matter. Yes, it is always my personal aim to keep things understood for everyone, beginner or advanced.

I don’t believe in complicating things nor do I see the need for it.

My philosophy always was and is to talk openly, especially, about spiritual topics in a clear and precise matter, after all, it is a part of our lives if we believe in it or not.

  8. To come upon your post proves very synchronistic to my experience.  I have done some energy healing in the last year and  delved further into the exploration of the body’s energy chakras and meridians and your very well thought out and delineated post on the heart chakra is really empowering information to have!  My seven year old son expressed an interest in learlnin about the chakras and now I have a solid go to when we dive in to expand our education.  Thanks a ton for this really useful content!

    1. Thank you for taking the time leaving a comment, appreciated.

Please feel free to read about the other chakras as well and if you have any question also feel free to ask them.

  9. This is the first ever time am coming across a post about Chakra. I must confess that i have been able to learn about this subject through your post and it has really widened my horizon in terms of general knowledge. The way you articulated and carefully designed your website is so wonderful. I will definitely refer back to your posts in the future, and i hope to read more of your subsequent posts on this subject

    1. Thank you for your comment and I hope you will find the other articles about the remaining chakras also informative. If you have further questions feel free to ask them.

  10. I love this guide to the fourth chakra! I’ve been doing chakra meditations for some time now and find it very helpful in clearing out negative energies that I didn’t even realize I was holding on to. Are you familiar with the idea of an 8th Chakra (or energy center) located about 16 inches above the head? Some people refer to this as Ka…

    1. Thank you, Tucker, for your comment and insight. The Heart Chakra is really the center of our existence and I hope you also have watched the video of the HaertMath Institute which reveals quite some interesting facts about the heart’s energy field.

Yes, I am also familiar with the so-called  “5 higher” chakras from the 8th chakra, the place our soul energy vibrates from, to the 12th chakra, the place of God consciousness, the Divine.

The subject matter on chakras is very vast and has its own “breathing” energy which is still growing revealing its information when the time is right, so to speak.
